SHAWN NEWKIRK

VARSITY HEAD COACH

AT UNION:

Coach Newkirk began coaching for Union in 1996.  He started as an assistant coach to Head Coach Bill Springman and then transitioned to the Head Coaching job in 2006.

BEFORE UNION:

Shawn taught Physical Education and coached at Hefner Middle School in Oklahoma city for 3 years.  He also coached 8th grade football and junior high wrestling and helped coach baseball at Putnam City West High School.

COACHING AWARDS:

In his first year as Head Coach at Union, the Union Redskins won a state title and Coach Newkirk was named Rookie Coach of the Year.  He was nominated for Coach of the Year honors in 2010 after leading another Redskin team to a State Championship.  Since 2006, the Redskins have won 4 Regional Championships.

PLAYING DAYS:

Coach Newkirk played baseball and wrestled 4 years at Putnam City West High School.  He then played college baseball 2 years each at NEO & NSU and received his degree from Central State University in Edmond. Shawn was selected to the All Regional Tournament team at NEO in 1983.

BEST MEMORIES:

Shawn’s best baseball memories include:  playing for the State title in 1981; throwing hours of batting practice; hitting the game winning 2 RBI off the centerfield wall at Driller Park in the regional tournament vs Seminole JC; and 2005, the year he lost his dad, he was asked to be the Interim Head Coach at Union, winning their second straight State Championship.

PERSONAL:

Coach Newkirk is married to Linda, a fellow Union teacher.  They have two children:  daughter Sasha,  a freshman at OU, and son Hunter, graduated from Union in 2015.
